Our preschool

As part of the NSW Government’s commitment to build 100 public preschools by Term 1 2027, our school has been selected to receive one of the new preschools.

Sackville Street Public Preschool will soon welcome families into our school community, where children will learn in a supportive, inclusive and play-based learning environment. Our preschool will be a valued part of our school, providing children with the best start in life and early learning.

Expressions of interest to enrol at our public preschool are now open!

Families who would like to enrol their child in the preschool can submit a completed Expression of interest to enrol in a NSW public preschool form to our school office. Printed copies of the form are also available from the office.

Please note: To have your Expression of Interest accepted and date stamped, the completed form and all relevant supporting documentation must be submitted in person at the school office. Original documents must be sighted by school office staff.

Please bring:

A checklist of this relevant supporting documentation is included at the end of the EOI form. It also includes a number of secondary documents that may be used.

Why choose Sackville Street Public Preschool?

At our preschool, children will explore, ask questions and learn through play. Our experienced staff will support children to have a positive transition into Kindergarten. We look forward to welcoming you and your child to our preschool when it opens.

Our Philosophy – Created Together

Our preschool philosophy is a reflection of the voices, values and vision of our Sackville Street community.

Our students, families and teachers came together to share their ideas about what is important for our children, how we want them to learn and grow, and the kind of community we want to create. These voices are woven throughout our philosophy.

A special part of this process was the creation of our bridge, developed by our students alongside local Dharawal artist Michael Fardon. The bridge represents the connection between our preschool and our school community, as well as each child's unique journey of growth, connection and transition. The river represents the Georges River and the flow of the water symbolises the journey through school, while the growing footprints represent children's growth along the way.

At the heart of our philosophy is Belonging, Being and Becoming. We believe children should feel connected, valued and supported as they explore, learn, develop confidence and become active participants in their learning and wellbeing.

Our philosophy is more than words, it represents who we are and the community we are building together.

Preschool hours and classes

Our preschool will operate from 9am to 3pm during the school term, following the same days and hours as our school, and will be closed during school and public holidays.

We have 3 preschool classes, each catering for up to 20 children per day.

Our preschool offers two 5 day fortnight attendance patterns, ensuring each child receives 600 hours of preschool each year.

Our Preschool Attendance Patterns

Our preschool offers two enrolment options:

OPTION 1 – Monday, Tuesday and alternate Wednesdays

  • Monday and Tuesday every week
  • Wednesday on alternate weeks
  • Wednesdays fall on  odd weeks  in line with the school term

OPTION 2 – Thursday, Friday and alternate Wednesdays

  • Thursday and Friday every week

  • Wednesday on alternate weeks

  • Wednesdays fall on  even weeks  in line with the school term

Fee-free preschool

Our public preschool will be free to attend. Start Strong funding is not used to subsidise fees at public preschools and may still be accessed by families at other early childhood education and care services.

Enrolment information

Public preschools enrol children for one year only, in the year before they start school. Children can enrol from the beginning of the school year if they turn 4 years of age before 31 July that year.

Unlike NSW public schools, there are no enrolment boundaries for public preschools. Children do not need to live in our school’s local enrolment intake area (catchment area) to apply. If the number of applications exceeds the number of available places, enrolments will be prioritised in accordance with the Public Preschool Enrolment Procedure.

Enrolment in a preschool class does not guarantee a place in Kindergarten at our school. School Finder can help families find their local public school.

For more information, please contact our school office or visit the Enrolment in a public preschool webpage.

Learning in our preschool

Our preschool will be an approved early learning service and operate under the National Quality Framework.

We will provide a safe, inclusive and positive learning environment where children feel supported to learn, grow and thrive.

Our child to staff ratio will be 10:1 and every class will be staffed with a university-trained early childhood teacher (ECT) and a trained School Learning Support Officer (SLSO) to ensure the high-quality delivery of early learning education.

Our learning program will offer age-appropriate, play-based learning experiences guided by the Early Years Learning Framework.

Preschool policies and procedures

We regularly review our policies and procedures to provide a safe, inclusive and high-quality learning environment for all children.

Further information about our preschool policies and procedures will be provided to families whose child receives an offer of enrolment. If you have any questions, please contact us.

Meals

Children bring their own meals and healthy snacks to preschool each day.

Families can also order lunch from the school canteen for preschool children on their days of attendance. There is a preschool-specific menu offering a range of healthy options aligned with our nutrition procedure.

Lunch orders can be placed at the school canteen in the morning or online via the Flexischools App.
